Preventing Osteoarthritis: Protecting Your Joints for Life
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis, often referred to as the "wear and tear" type. It can significantly impact mobility and cause disability, especially in the second half of life. While pain medications may provide temporary relief, they have been shown to accelerate the progression of OA.
At our clinic, we take OA prevention seriously. That’s why we use X-rays to assess areas of the spine that show issues on your scan or demonstrate reduced range of motion. Restoring mobility to these joints, combined with the right supplements, can help slow arthritis progression. As with any healthy habit, consistency is key. This is why we recommend regular visits every 3-4 weeks, along with dietary modifications and supplements when necessary.
It’s important to remember that OA often starts without pain—just like heart disease, cancer, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure. By the time symptoms appear, the damage may already be irreversible, severely affecting your quality of life. Prevention is the best approach! While hip and knee replacements are possible, they’re never quite the same as your original joints—and there are no replacements for your vertebrae. Taking proactive steps now ensures a healthier, more mobile future.
In addition to chiropractic care and lifestyle modifications, maintaining a healthy weight plays a crucial role in OA prevention. Excess weight places additional stress on weight-bearing joints, such as the knees and hips, accelerating cartilage breakdown. Regular low-impact exercises, such as swimming, cycling, and yoga, can help improve joint flexibility and strengthen the surrounding muscles, reducing strain on the joints. A well-balanced diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods, such as leafy greens, fatty fish, and nuts, can also support joint health and slow OA progression.
