Weekly Q&A with Dr. Darrell: Understanding Osteoarthritis

This week, we take a closer look at the most common type of arthritis: Osteoarthritis (OA). While there are many forms of arthritis, OA is by far the most prevalent—and the good news is, it’s largely preventable!

What is Osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of bones gradually wears away. This condition can affect any joint, but it most commonly impacts the knees, hips, and spine. When pelvic joints aren’t moving properly, they can alter your gait, leading to additional stress and wear on your knees and hips.

How Can You Prevent Osteoarthritis?

Restoring motion to affected joints and incorporating key lifestyle changes can help slow the progression of arthritis. Prevention starts with consistency, which is why we recommend:

  • Regular Chiropractic Visits: Adjustments every 3-4 weeks can help maintain proper joint function and mobility.
  • A Healthy Diet: Eating a diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods can support joint health.
  • Exercise: Strengthening the muscles around your joints with regular, low-impact movement can help reduce strain.
  • Supplements: In some cases, targeted supplements can aid in joint preservation.

Just like other chronic conditions—such as high blood pressure or heart disease—OA can progress silently before symptoms appear. Taking proactive steps today can help you maintain mobility and quality of life for years to come.

Stay active, stay informed, and take charge of your joint health!
