Chiropractic Myths

Subluxation May copy 3

Here’s some Christmas conversation!  Who has heard about chiropractic care being about putting bones back in place?  That its dangerous to get your neck adjusted?  That it can cause arthritis!

Let's start with the crazy popping sound that gets tons of Tic Toc hits! It’s amazing to me how many people think its bones actually grinding on each other.  I sure you would not want that!

The sound is from a negative pressure causing some of the fluid in the joint to turn into a gas which is called cavitation.  Essentially, when you gap the joint to move it one causes a bubble to suddenly form inside the joint. The bubble is trapped inside the joint so it can’t go anywhere and hurt you and it is simply reabsorbed back into the fluid within about 20 mins.

The goal of adjustments is not to put a bone in place.  The goal is to restore normal motion to the joint so that it does not irritate the spinal nerve root.  Simple!  …but complex.   The spine is like a giant game of Jenga!  The 99 joints of the human spine (including rib joints) all interact with one another and the compensation mechanisms are very complicated.  Adjustments are successful when we are able to allow the nerves work better by getting those joints off your nerves!

Nerves connect your brain to your body so it’s an understatement to say its rather important that they are working well!  Correcting that nerve interference is the goal of chiropractic.

What about safety?  Most people have heard the stories about that.  Adjustments are incredibly safe in the hands of a skilled chiropractor.  I have a review of the scientific literature in the office for people who have concerns.  Negative reactions to care are in the one per millions of procedures which is quite enviable by medical standards.  This is reflected in our extremely low malpractice insurance premiums.

Another myth is the, “once you start you have to keep going.”  This is not so!  I answer this one by explaining that chiropractic care for the spine is no different than any healthy habit like eating well, exercising or good sleep; its good for you for as long as you do it but you're certainly not worse off for having done it for a period of time.  If you still have the stressors in your life that caused these problems (emotional stress, physical stress or even poor diet or drugs) then we do recommend periodic tune ups to help mitigate the effects of stress on your nervous system.

What about side effects?  Aside from some temporary soreness from getting joints moving the side effects are great!  Many patients report better mobility, more restful sleep, having more energy, better mood and an overall better sense of well being.
