Final pillar of Health Span is Emotional Health
The third and final pillar of Health Span is Emotional Health.
I mean really, what’s the point of living a long time if you're miserable! Each week this month we’ll be talking about several strategies to improve emotional health. For this week our focus will be on fostering positive relationships, decreasing screen time (especially social media), and finding or bolstering your sense of purpose in your sphere of influence.
Sounds pretty fluffy but if you back these somewhat vague ideas with action it can make a huge difference in your degree of happiness!
Action steps:
- Pick up the phone and call an old friend
- Track and reduce your screen time (especially social media and before bed)
- DO something, ANYTHING that improves your sense of improving the world around you!
One of my favourite books is “Man's Search for Meaning” by Viktor Frankl. He has a quote which addresses this well, "When a man can't find a deep sense of meaning, they distract themselves with pleasure”. The pleasure he speaks of these days that does not contribute to a sense of meaning would be scrolling media, consumerism, eating artificially flavoured foods, etc.
Next week we’ll discuss PHYSICAL ways you can increase your sense of well being.
