Muscle March - Understanding Sarcopenia
Understanding Sarcopenia
Sarcopenia is the medical term for the gradual loss of muscle mass that occurs as we age. Over time, this decline can lead to a loss of strength and function, making it harder to enjoy activities like playing sports or keeping up with grandchildren.
The more muscle we build and maintain in our younger years, the longer we can delay the disabling effects of sarcopenia. On the flip side, the later we start addressing muscle loss, the more challenging it becomes to slow its progression.
When I think about my patients, I consider two critical timeframes: the next ten years and their last ten years. The final decade of life—often called the “marginal decade” in longevity science—can be significantly impacted by the choices we make today.
This month, we’ll explore four key strategies to preserve muscle mass and slow sarcopenia, helping you maintain strength for a healthier, more active future.
