This weeks Q & A with Dr. Darrell, we look at how sensitive our nerves are.  In my last year of my B.Sc. I did a report on the work of Hans Selye.  He was one of the pioneer researchers on nerve interference in the spinal cord and associated nerve roots.  Prior to that work it was a fair amount of speculation on the part of chiropractors which turned out to be correct!

He did studies that showed it took only 2 grams of pressure to decrease function 60%.  That’s about the weight of a dime!  Put a dime on your arm and imagine that decreasing your arm function 60%!   Spinal nerves are the connection from the brain to your bodies organs, muscles, sensory nerves and so on.  Also, your brain has to react to input from the environment using that sensory information.  How well would you do if you only heard 60% of the words on a telephone call?  Probably be a bit of confusion!

So the nerves are very sensitive which is why they are protected by the skull and spinal column.  When things go wrong in the movement of that spinal column it puts the nerves at risk.  Thats where we come in!
