Supplements for Cognitive Decline - Weekly Q&A
This weeks Q & A with Dr. Darrell, we look at what supplements may help prevent cognitive decline.
The top four modifiable ways to slow cognitive decline as we age in order are #1 Physical exercise #2 A good diet that mitigates insulin spikes #3 restful sleep #4 activities like learning a new language, or combining brain and body such as dancing.
The least important but easiest to do would be supplements. Like all nutrition research, it is very difficult to isolate what works. The supplements below can be found in foods but we don’t usually get enough of them. The two that stand out as plausible candidates are the B vitamins; B6, B9 and B12 especially in the methylated form and Omega-3. Methylated B’s are the more natural and bioavailable form. Omega-3 should also be from a reputable brand (sorry, not Webber). Top brands like Metagenics and Douglas labs have a third party assess their quality which is why they are more expensive but in some cases, worth it.
Note that supplements are last on the list of things you can do to prevent cognitive decline. It’s so much more important to have that healthy overall lifestyle that we speak so much about here at Summerside Chiropractic. Keep tuning in and keep your health top of mind!
