This weeks Q & A with Dr. Darrell, we look at the most concerning things to watch for in monitoring Myeloma.

Myeloma is by far the most dangerous type of skin cancer.  Identifying it early is critical to surviving it.

In Canada it’s not easy to get these things assessed by a dermatologist so its important to do self checks.  There are great resources online as well.

As a chiropractor we do see a fair amount of skin especially on the initial exam and I’ve definitely caught a few skin cancers in my career. A spouse or friend can be helpful though because areas like your back should also be checked about every 6 months especially if you have some of the risk factors discussed in previous blogs.

There is an acronym for checking these nevi (moles) to be sure they are not cancerous.

ABCDE

Asymmetry - one half is not like the other
Border - borders are blurry or not well defined, scalloped looking and/or irregular
Colour - The colour is variable and not uniform throughout
Diameter - larger ones can be more dangerous but not always
Evolving - A changing mole is concerning.  Taking pictures of it to monitor changes is a good idea and can be shown to a dermatologist. Scaling, itching, tingling bleeding or any change should be evaluated ASAP

We don’t have to be afraid of the sun.  You do have to be cognizant of your skin type as to how much sunlight you permit on your skin.  So depending on your skin type enjoy the sun within reason and don’t allow your skin to burn.  Clothing and using a good quality mineral based sun screen is the best way to protect your self if you are in direct sunlight.  If you already have a history of severe burns make sure you are self checking.

Have a wonderful rest of Summer!

Yours in Health,  Dr. Darrell Morin
