It’s amazing to me how many people think its bones actually grinding on each other. I sure would not want that!
The sound is from a negative pressure causing some of the fluid in the joint to turn into a gas which is called cavitation. Essentially, when you gap the joint to move it one causes a bubble to suddenly form inside the joint. The bubble is trapped inside the joint so it can’t go anywhere and hurt you and it is simply reabsorbed back into the fluid within about 20 mins.
