Subluxation May!
Subluxation is the central concern of wellness based chiropractors. It can’t be seen on an X-ray, it can’t be found on a blood test and it can’t be seen or felt by any other doctor other than those trained to find them.
So what is it? A subluxation can occur in any joint of the body. It’s different from a dislocation in that the joints are still intact but there is a problem with how the joint MOVES.
When a subluxation occurs in the elbow it’s immediately uncomfortable during movement. In the spine it’s very different since there is another joint about 1 cm away to compensate for the dysfunctional joint. The body does this so that the dysfunctional joint does not endanger the spinal nerve.
Since the spinal nerves are so critical to your survival, the body adapts or compensates for the dysfunction. It’s a redundant system to allow you to absorb stress and continue to survive with the dysfunction.
However, surviving isn’t thriving! These dysfunctions start to add up and eventually you will start to notice subtle symptoms. The problem is that these dysfunctions can become quite chronic and create permanent damage to the spine by the time symptoms are actually felt as pain.
To complicate matters further, the majority of subluxations are painless! Patients often come in for a pain in one area but have much worse issues in their spine that are giving the patient no symptoms whatsoever.
This is the crux of the problem in this profession. We have a problem (subluxation) that other professionals are not trained to find and they (subluxations) are often painless.
Evidence of subluxation can be obtained using sEMG scans but actually finding them requires the hands of someone who spent 7 years of school learning the biology of detecting and correcting them. While X-ray cannot find a subluxation, it can find evidence that one has been there for a long time. When joints are stuck and/or not moving properly they become arthritic. Osteoarthritis from subluxation is visible on X-ray after about 5 years. Reversal of OA is not possible but slowing the progress with correction of subluxation is.
But wait, there’s more!
Subluxations also cause local inflammation, scar tissue, nerve irritation, and muscle atrophy. So there’s a lot more to that “pop” sound than many realize. We are attempting to restore normal function to that joint so that it reduces the effects of subluxation on your nervous system and ultimately your health!
Each week this month I will have a question to break this all down, so stay tuned!
